Medal Competitions
For the fixtures on the 12th June, 3rd July and 7th July, simply sign in as normal on the day to be entered into the eponymous competition.
Gilroy and J Philip Trophies
Played over two rounds on consecutive days, this is our first ‘major’ of the season, and comes with a pair of beautiful trophies and large prizes- one for scratch and one for handicap. I have moved our booking forward by half an hour, as some competitors wished to be finish in time for the football. Please email me if you fall into this category.
Sign in is via the ClubV1 app, or by emailing me at the address below.
St Andrews Match
The return fixture of this historic tie takes place in a few weeks’ time. Emails have gone out to the lowest handicappers in our database and most of the places have been filled. However, there are a few more places left, so keep an eye on your inbox for the lucky Golden Ticket!
Carnoustie Match
This takes the form of a scratch match over the Championship course and a handicap match over the Burnside. Details of how to sign up, bus arrangements etc will follow in the weeks to come. In the meantime- save the date!
Arbroath Match
As promised in this very newsletter, the sun shone, the course was in fantastic condition and the hospitality was amazing. The golf, unfortunately, cannot be described in such glowing terms, although the fact the bus found it difficult to get a car parking space next to the Arbroath horses, and there was very little room left in the locker room between all the sombreros and bullet belts, gives an idea of what Monifieth we up against. Bitter? Moi?

Please check the tables below for accuracy- that’s the point of publishing them! As you can see from the volume of pay outs, there is a lot of scope for a mistake.
FAQs
As promised, we have begun a section dedicated to the miseries, mistakes, and misunderstandings of Monifieth members. Never was it more apt than that a teacher should be Match Secretary when, having presented the same information over and over again in newsletters for a year, as well as citing links to other web pages for further explanation, the same apathetic ruffian at the back of the class still raises his hand to ask “how do you….?”
Q1. My playing handicap is different to my course handicap. Why is this?
A1. Everyone has a handicap index. Depending on the course you are playing, and the tees used, a calculation to do with the slope rating (how easy or difficult a course is) will give you a course handicap. This is used to calculate your score differential, which goes towards your handicap. However, under the new rules, in a stroke-play competition, there is a handicap allowance of 95% of the course handicap which generates your playing handicap on the day. WHS say that this creates a more level playing field.
EXAMPLE: My handicap index is 9.9- what should my playing handicap be on the Ashludie Course?
ANSWER: 9.9 x (110/113) x 0.95 = 9.15530973 which is rounded to give 9.

Q2. I scored 34 points yesterday and my handicap went up 0.7, how can this be?
A2. Because the new handicap index is an average, it is unlikely, but not impossible, that such big swings in a handicap occur (there are also mitigations which stop too great a swing). In this case though, the system was- as always- correct.
The player’s 21st score- the one that no longer counted in his record (which, incidentally, he can look at on Scottish Golf), had a score differential of 8.2. This was miles better than the one that ended up replacing it, hence such a big swing. His next lowest score differential was 8.6 and then rest of his counting ones are all between 10.1 and 14.0. Hence, the new handicap, far from being “rotten” (as the understandably frustrated golfer described it!), is actually a better representation of how he is currently playing (i.e there is no evidence he can play to 8).

Q3a. I won the sweep, but it’s someone else’s name in the newsletter. Why?
A3a. Because you didn’t enter the sweep! The table below is for players to check if they have been returned the correct money. If you have not entered the sweep- big or little- or twos, you cannot win it. Please see HowDidIdo for overall places- or as Jim Bowen might have said, “look what you could have won”!
Q3b. I got a Magic 2, where are my winnings?
A3b. The returning of winnings is not automated, the Match Secretary has to run the results, check the results against who has actually entered, assign winnings accordingly, record these winnings in the table which is published each week, record entry fees versus payouts for purposes of accounting and then manually return the correct amount to each of those who have won. The most efficient way to do this is weekly, meaning a short wait before you get your £dosh back!
Q3c. Why is there such a big discrepancy in the amounts paid between the winner and the player finishing second?
A3c. Basically, to save time (see above for details of the logistics involved in running seven sweeps every week- far more than some other local clubs!). Second place prize money doesn’t ‘kick in’ until there is a pot of at least £12, thereby saving the effort of having to return many miniscule prizes.
