The R&A Senior Marshal Management Team is required to recruit sufficient volunteer marshals to ensure a safe and successful Championship for all. I’m sure you’re aware that a great many of these volunteers are members of clubs in the vicinity of the Championship venue. The task of recruiting is delegated to members within the clubs who are themselves volunteer marshals. In our case, Pete Rhind is to be the Hole Controller with Brian McKaig appointed as his deputy. To aid the recruitment, advertising materials were posted in each of the Clubhouses for several weeks towards the end of last year and application forms were made available from the starters and our clubhouse bars.
Despite this, a very small percentage of the thousand or so Monifieth Links members have applied. We appreciate that not everyone will want to undertake marshalling duties as some will believe they wouldn’t enjoy it, some will think they are too old or too young but age is not a barrier and of course others simply cannot be available for work reasons.
For volunteering, marshals are given a season ticket (worth over £250) for entry to the course even when not “working”, a waterproof jacket and hat, daily meal/drink vouchers when on duty and a small rucksack, water bottle and shoe bag. In return, they must be able to attend on at least 2 of the practice days (15-18 July) and 3 of the championship days (19-22 July) to “work” an approximate 5 hour shift although to give us flexibility, it would be preferable if they were to make themselves available for more days. Different holes require more marshalling than others. Some have ball spotting duties or crossings and grandstands to be managed as well as the main control of crowds at tees, fairways and greens. The allocation of holes is based on a Club’s numbers and is expected to be done late February, so while at present, the opportunity still exists for more applications, it is likely that at that stage, this window will be closed.
If you are interested in participating then we need to know as soon as possible so pick up an application form from the starters or your own Club bar. Once completed, this can be forwarded electronically to email@example.com or handed in to the starters or to the Grange Club bar marked for the attention of Pete Rhind.
We thank you for your consideration of this offer and look forward to receiving your forms.
