The Medal Course has hosted many National Amateur Championships and has also been the venue for The Open Championship Final Qualifying on four occasions. The latest being in 2007 when The Open was played at nearby Carnoustie.

At 6650 yards it provides a stiff test of golf especially when the wind blows.
The first six holes have the London to Aberdeen railway line tight on the right-hand side which has captured many an errant slice

Water hazards feature on three holes with the Barry Burn meandering through the course at the 6th. and 7th. holes and a large pond in play down the left of the 10th. fairway.

With a par of 71, the back nine is generally accepted as being slightly easier so it is important that the foundation of a good score is laid on the way out.

There are a few short par 4's which provide good birdie opportunities but beware as sometimes they can have a sting in their tail. If played well they provide respite from the longer par 4's where on any day pars are a good score.

The par 3's are interesting and of varying length and proper club selection is vital to finding and holding the greens.
The 18th. hole is a par 5 named after Monifieth member Ian Hutcheon. The green is adjacent to the front of the Monifieth clubhouse where from the lounge members and visitors can relax and watch players completing their round of golf.
The key to playing this course well is accurate driving. Keep the ball on the fairways and a low score is within your grasp.
